Artist – Coldplay
Album – A Head Full of Dreams (2015)
Coldplay are a rock band from London, UK. Forming in 1996 the band currently consists of Chris Martin – vocals/guitar/piano, Jonny Buckland – lead guitar, Guy Berryman – bass and Will Champion – drums. The band became globally successful after the release of the single ‘Yellow’, shortly after came their debut album ‘Parachutes’. The success of ‘Parachutes’ awarded the band a headline spot at Glastonbury in 2002, which they have gone on to headline twice more as well as play almost every other major festival worldwide. Coldplay now follow up their 6th album release ‘Ghost Stories’ with the hotly anticipated ‘A Head Full of Dreams’.
‘A Head Full of Dreams’ starts how it means to go on and fully incorporates the Coldplay style, repetitive but memorable choruses, edge-esque delay ridden guitar melodies and reverb smothered drums, to create that stadium pop-rock sound. Unlike most rock bands Coldplay have called upon a few friends to help out vocal wise, including Beyonce and Noel Gallagher, as well as including a sample of American president Barrack Obama. All this I feel relates to the tone of this album. Whereas Ghost town was kind of sad in tone (due to Martin’s recent divorce), ‘A Head …’ focuses on dreams, happiness and colour (as seen in the bright artwork), therefore bringing in friends (guest vox) to display the happy vibe. Anyone looking for something a little different from Coldplay with this album I feel will be sorely disappointed. The song structures are typical pop (intro-verse-chorus etc), vocal melodies almost replicate previous hits and there is nothing notably interesting or experimental coming from the guitars, bass or drums. My recommended songs to listen to would be ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ and ‘Everglow’.
‘A Head Full of Dream’ is simply just more Coldplay, which i’m sure many will be happy with and i’m sure it will sell ridiculous amounts. It’s just getting a little stale for me.
