Review #66: Circa Waves – Young Chasers

Artist – Circa Waves
Album – Young Chasers (2015)

Check it out –

Circa Waves are an indie rock band from Liverpool, UK. The group are comprised of four members, Kieran Shudall – guitar/vocals, Sam Rourke – bass, Colin Jone – drums and Joe Falconer – guitar. Circa Waves initially met at Liverpool Sound City festival, meeting second guitarist Falconer at the same festival the year after. Due to the band only forming two years ago they currently only have one E.P out ‘Young Chasers E.P’ and the newly released debut album of the same name ‘Young Chasers. Here it is.

Although ‘Young Chasers’ has a number of influences and a little bit of variety in style, the general tone is that of the newish indie bands, Two Door Cinema Club, Bombay Bicycle club etc. This is displayed mainly through lead singer Kieran’s vocal delivery and the high pitched guitar melodies, not too catchy, but fit well within the song. Although i say the guitar parts aren’t entirely catchy, there are songs that stick with you due to their catchy choruses and lyrics, specifically the songs ‘Young Chasers’ and ‘Fossils’ (which have proven the most popular from the album). Diversity comes quite thin but can be heard in songs such as ‘Deserve This’ in which the rhythm and vocal delivery quickly changes from indie to an old doo-wop/rockabilly style, working quite well together. ‘Young Chasers’ doesn’t really do much differently from many other indie rock album out at the minute, but it does do this style well and has a few catchy songs.

This album was enjoyable and had a steady but energetic pacing throughout. Each song had its place and felt as part of a whole piece of work, rather than separate singles. This isn’t anything mind blowing, but for a debut album it is certainly a step in the right direction.
